Learn by ear
We've learned tunes both by ear and from written music. As an experiment we have also tried learning by ear in a non-traditional way - from computer files. Now you can try it for yourself.
All sounds below are generated from computer files; not as responsive as if we had recorded a live musician, but broadly good enough to learn the basic thrust of the tune.
The tune is initially split into the phrases that build each part of the tune. Listen to each file and then play it back on your instrument. Repeat.
Resist the temptation to move on to the next file before you have thoroughly grasped each phrase. As you do so listen for repetition and variation of the various phrases throughout the tune. The 'A part only' file can be used for final revisions.
Move on and learn the B music in the same way. When you finally try to play the whole tune you will almost certainly need to refer back to the 'A part only' file again. If at any point you can't remember a small part of the tune refer to the specific file for that part and play it over until you are more confident.
